Came across my notes from the Spoken Word institute I took part in over the summer, and Lemon was one of the facilitators. It was a blessing to hang around him and the rest of the Urban Word crew for a couple of days. He asked me if he should ever come to the Philippines and I said, “Absolutely.”
“You speak english out there right?” (he was being sarcastic of course)
A few notes from my sessions with him, which I hope to keep growing from:
- Be the human experience in the room
- Stay out of your head and dig in to your emotion — the truth suffers from too much analysis
- Fight the cool - trying to be cool, look cool, act cool, is what pollutes your art.
- Struggle is struggle, there is no race (meaning: color)
- The character creates the TRUTH the audience doesn’t know
And my most favorite Lemon sound bite:
Don’t hold on to your words like they are children. Make them orphans.
